A trip to Cheongsan Island.
Cheongsan Island, the island of slowness.
I went because I wanted to see the place after watching a movie about it.
However, the place was different then.
The roads were paved with cement, and I didn't feel the same emotion.
I took the train from Seoul at around 10:30.
The last boat to enter Cheongsan Island from Wando was the 4:30 boat,
which arrived at the dock at 4:00.
I didn't even check the boat's time while making plans for the trip, and it nearly failed. When I got off the dock, it seemed as though everyone was moving in a private car, but I was the only one who started walking with a backpack.
I had checked a few B&Bs on the map, but I had no idea where to go.
I had no choice but to just walk.
I didn't have a reservation, so I had to walk in and ask.
The guesthouse I'd checked out looked empty. The owner didn't seem to be there.
I was told to move to another place and stay two nights. 40,000 won a night.
I decided to unpack my clothes and pack dinner.
I went to the sashimi restaurant I had seen on the way in.
I sashayed a dodari, which looks similar to halibut, and headed back to my room with a bottle of soju.
I didn't know the name of the fish, so I let the owner take care of it.
On the first day, I didn't get along with the owner.
I asked if I could light up a cigarette in the yard, and she said it was fine.
I ended the day with a few glasses of soju with sashimi.
The next morning, I said good morning to the owner of the house.
She hadn't stopped working in the yard all day.
The owner called you grandma.
I addressed her as grandma, and when she saw me, she addressed me as boss.
I briefly told her about my trip.
The weather in June was hot enough to make me sweat.
I used the map on my phone to guide me, which detailed the alleyways and gave me directions as I walked.
The filming location was neat, clean, and well organized.
I snapped a few photos.
I decided to climb the mountain in the center of the island as I had originally planned.
Along the way, a cow mooed happily(?). I waved my hand and it mooed back.
The sound of the cow's mooing couldn't have been more friendly.
It echoed through the whole village.
I retraced my steps several times to find the road up the mountain,
but when I reached the mountain, there was no road.
So I just sat there and smoked. I cooled my sweat with a fan I had brought with me,
I smoked while carefully hiding (^^;) from the forest fire.
And I thought.
It was a time to be alone with myself in a place where there was no interference.
Am I losing my humanity?
People here in Cheongsan Island seem to be keeping their humanity.
I leaved notes on my phone.
And when I get thirsty, I go to the well in the village below to quench my thirst.
I climb back up, rest a few times, feel my heart sinking,
and then I headed back to my room.
We can't see swallows in Seoul anymore.
But I could see them flying all over the island, and at the swallow house, I could see a few baby swallows poking their heads out.
Secluded, undisturbed.
It was just the kind of place I wanted to be.
The video footage was taken around the harbor's breakwater.
I resized it and converted it, but it didn't come out clear, so I posted it as is. It's 100 meg, so it's big.
On my last day, I greeted the grandmother and she wished me well.
I thank her.
Take care, grandma. By the way, I also met her husband, the grandfather, and said hello to him,
but he didn't say a word.
The name of the village where I stayed at the minpaku is Dorak-ri.
